Indian Record at Oval: Three losses, One Win and 7 Draws

India has played 11 tests at the Oval, registering a win, losing 2 and drawing 7. The last game in 2011 between them saw England complete their whitewash. Before that 6 games have been drawn keeping the record keepers busy with high scores and mostly affected by rain. The complete details show batting and rain being prominent leader at the Oval.

India in England 2014: Schedule and Results

1936

    Result: Eng won by 9 wickets
    Captains: G Allen (Eng), Vizianagram (Ind)
    Score: Eng 471/8 & 64/1, Ind 222 & 312

Wally Hammond scored 217 and Worthington scored 128 partnering 264 runs for 4th wicket. Nissar took 5/120 for India. But India had to follow on. Merchant (52) and Mushtaq Ali (52) gave good opening in first inning, but India collapsed. Following on Wicketkeeper Hussain (54) and CK Nayudu (81) fought to help India reach 312. Sims grabbed 5/73 in first inning while G Allen grabbed 7/80 in second inning to snatch victory for England.

1946: Draw

    Captains: Pataudi Snr. (Ind), Hammond (Eng)
    Score: Ind 331, Eng 95/3

Game could see only 1 complete inning. India rode on opener Vijay Merchant’s century (128) and Mushtaq Ali’s 59.

1952: Draw

    Captains: Len Hutton (Eng), Vijay Hazare (Ind)
    Score: Eng 326, Ind 98

Rain dominated again and helped India who were bowled out at 98 in their only innings. England riding on opening partnership of 143 between Hutton (86) and Sheppard (119) and then 118 for 1st wicket between Sheppard & Ikin, scored 326/6. Bedser (5/41) and Trueman (5/48) folded India below 100.

1959

    Eng won by innings and 27 runs
    Captains: D Gaekwad (Ind), M Cowdrey (Eng)
    Score: Ind 140 & 194, Eng 361

England needed just one innings to win the match where Subba Row (94), M Smith (98), Illingworth (50) and wicketkeeper Swetman (65) took England to 361. Surendranath took 5/75. India could not touch 200-mark in both innings. Bapu Nadkarni (76) was the only Indian batsman to score a half-century.

1971

    India win by 4 wickets
    Captains: Ajit Wadekar (Ind), Illingworth (Eng)
    Score: Eng 355 & 101, Ind 284 & 174/6

England scored their lowest total against India. Chandra grabbed 6/38. In first inning Jameson (82), Knott (90) and R Hutton (81) took England to 355 in first inning. Dilip Sardesai (54) and Engineer (59) scored half-centuries in first innings of India. Illingworth grabbed 5/70.

1979: Draw

    Captains: Brearley (Eng), Venkataraghavan (Ind)
    Score: Eng 305 & 334/8, Ind 202 & 429/8

One of the most interesting match to be played at Oval saw India falling short of 438-run chase by just 8 runs with 2 wickets at hand when play was called off. Gavaskar scored 221 in the chase while his opening partner Chetan Chauhan scored 80. Both creating the platform for huge chase with 213 run opening partnership. Vengasarakar (52) with Gavaskar added further 153 for 1st wicket.

1982: Draw

    Captain: R Willis (Eng), Gavaskar (Ind)
    Score: Eng 594 & 191/3, Ind 410 & 111/3

High scoring match saw Botham (208) and Allan Lamb (107) scoring centuries. Randall (95) and Kapil Dev (97) missed their centuries. G Cook (50), Shastri (66), Sandeep Patil (62), Tavare (75*), and Viswanath (56 & 75*) scored half-centuries.

1990: Draw

    Captain: Azharuddin (Ind), Gooch (Eng)
    Score: Ind 606, Eng 340 & 477/4

India posted their highest total in England with centuries from opener Shastri (187) and allrounder Kapil Dev (110). Captain Azhar (78) and wicketkeeper More (61) scored half-centuries. Gooch (85), R Smith (57) and Hemmings (51) could not save follow on. Batting again Gower (157) with 176-run opening partnership between Gooch (88) and Atherton (86) and half-century from Lamb (52) helped England score high.

2002: Draw

    Captain: Hussain (Eng), Ganguly (Ind)
    Score: Eng 515 & 114/0, Ind 508

Vaughan (195), Trescothick (57), M Butcher (54), Dominic Cork (52) helped England post huge total. Harbhajan took 5/115. Dravid (217), Tendulkar (54) and Ganguly (51) posted huge Indian reply.

2007: Draw

    Captains: Dravid (Ind) Vaughan (Eng)
    Score: Ind 664 & 180/6, Eng 345 & 369/6

India posted their biggest total against England. Kumble (110*) scored the only Indian century of the series. Karthik (91), Dravid (55), Tendulkar (82), Laxman (51), Dhoni (92) scored half-centuries. England replies with 3 half-centuries of Cook (61), Collingwood (62) and Bell (63). India did not ask them to follow on. Ganguly hit 57 in second innings. Chasing 500 runs Pietersen scored 101 and Bell scored 67 to leave match in balance at end.
