2009 CL Twenty20 Championship: Team Performances

The inaugural tournament of the global Champions League for Twenty20 Champions across the globe saw 12 teams participating. The top three teams of Indian Premier League competed with two teams each from Australia, South Africa, England and one team each from West Indies, Sri lanka and New Zealand. None of the host Indian teams could reach the semifinal. Victoria and Cobras lost in the semifinal. New South Wales emerged champion after defeating Trinidad & Tobago in the final.

Brett Lee and captain Katich – the oldies – played a crucial role in leading their team to become the first team to win global Twenty20 Championship, held in India.

Best Batsmen and Bowlers of Teams
New South Wales playes scored 5 half-centuries. Warner (207) and Hughes (202) were among the best three batsmen of the tournament. Their bowlers rocked the opponents. Henriques (10), Stuart Clark (9), Brett Lee (8), Hauritz (7), Bollinger and Smith (4 each) never let the opponents relax.

Victoria batsmen could not score a half-century. None of the batsmen could cross 100-run mark too. Still they reached semifinals due to their bowling. McKay (10), McDonald (9), Harwood (6) did not let opponents breathe easy.

Trinidad & Tobago were the most popular team. They scored 3 half-centuries and presence of allrounders got them into finals. Perkins (129) was their best batsman. Pollard (146) with the fastest 50 of the tournament, D Ganga (118) and Barath (106) were other prominent scorers. Dwayn Bravo was exceptional with ball grabbing highest 12 wickets. S Ganga (6), Mohammed (5), Rampaul, Simmons and Pollard (4 each) supported Bravo very well.

Cape Cobras scored a century (by Puttick) and 3 half-centuries. Duminy (224 runs with 2 half-centuries) was the best batsman of the tournament. Kleinveldt with 6 wickest was their best bowler earning their best bowling figure of 3/24.

Royal Challengers Bangalore competed as the best Indian team. Their batsmen scored 4 half-centuries, with Ross Taylor (152) and Uthappa (115) crossing the 100-run mark in 4 matches, while Dravid being the third best scorer with 93 runs in 3 innings. Kallis scored 81 runs with a half-century in 2 innings. RCB bowlers appeared a good unit, grabbing 23 wickets in 4 matches. Kumble with 5 wickets was their best bowler. Praveen Kumar and Merwe also grabbed 4 wicket each.

Eagles scored just one half-century. Rossouw with 123 runs (including the half-century) was their only batsmen to cross 100-run. C de Villiers was the best bowler with 6 wickets and also the best bowling figure of the tournament 4/17. du Preez grabbed 4 wickets.

Somerset batsmen contributed only a half-century. None of the batsmen could aggregate even 90 runs in 2 matches. Thomas and Willoughby grabbed 6 wickets each and provided some boost to the team with the help of Phillips (4), Waller and Bruyn (3 wkt each(.

2009 IPL Champion Deccan Chargers proved to be the weakest Indian link. None of the batsmen could aggregate 70 runs. Gilchrist did hit their only half-century. Edwards, RP Singh and Suman grabbed 3-wicket each in 2 matches.

For Delhi Daredevils, only Sehwag could cross 100-run mark scoring 134 with a half-century. Karthik hit the other half-century for DD. Nannes was easily the best bowler with 9 wickets. Mishra grabbed 3. McGrath got 2 in the only match he played.

Waymaba was easily one of the weakest team. Studded with Sri Lankan national team stars, the team could score only one half-century. Mahela scored 56 runs (highest for Wayamba) with a half-century. Only Welegedara could grab 4 wickets.

Otago was one of the easiest prey. Playing 2 matches, none of their batsmen could touch 50-run mark, while their bowlers could grab only 6 wickets.

Sussex team was completely out of place in India. None of their batsmen could aggregate 50 runs in 2 matches. Piyush Chwala grabbed 3 wickets and Brown grabbed 2 wickets. Other bowlers could not contribute any more wickets.
