IPL 2013 Match 11: Super Kings are Wary of Kings XI

Chennai Super Kings had a strange-hold over Kings XI in the first 3 IPL editions. But after their Super over win of 2010, they have won 4 of the 5 matches, and most important that in the last two editions they have won all the three matches. Chennai Super Kings may be the champions, but they have all the reasons to worry about the outcome in Mohali. Kings XI are favorites.

The rain of sixes just started in IPL 2013 yesterday in the two matches at Bangalore and Mumbai, Mohali has been pace friendly, historically. What would it dish out for Pro-Batsmen IPL match!! Both the teams have good bowlers to exploit the offerings. In pace, Kings XI have an edge while it is injustice to expect Piyush Chawla match the guile of Ashwin, and even Jadeja too. While CSKs batting prowess is fearsome, even Kings XI have many big hitters and comparatively balanced bowling unit too. The battle may go very close.

History
They have met 10 times, including the semifinals of 2008. Except the Super Over win in 2010, Kings XI has failed to avoid loss in other 6 games making them an easy prey. They have won only four matches against the IPL champions, but the encouraging factor is that in 2011 and 2012 they have won all the three matches, and that too twice with the performance of unknown Indian players.

2013 Performance
Kings XI routed Pune Warriors in away match. But Chennai Super Kings fell short against Mumbai Indians at home. While winning was not a surprise against comparatively weaker side of Warriors, the notable part was the hunger to win, and desire to make it big. Going for the Net Run Rate improvement, they certainly have a plan to enter the big four league again. CSK on the other hand did not have a plan B and as a result despite all the heroics of Captain Dhoni they ended up losing the match, despite having a very strong batting line-up.

Overall Performances in IPL
Although the win in the first match has got their loss- win ratio equal (37 wins and 37 losses), Kings XI own one of the worst portfolio. Off-field reasons has affected their overall performance, but the performance improved last year and they are a strong contender for the knock out phase. They have also reached one semifinal and won the Kingfisher Fair Play Award in 2009.
CSK has the best portfolio with 47 wins, 34 losses and 1 No result. They have reached knock out stage in all the five editions, and won the tournament twice besides once winning the CLT20 also.

Can Kings XI Nail Another Blow!
Considering the last three results in two editions, CSK may be in worry mode and would plan their best to turn the tables and get back to the situation that they were in the first three editions when they registered 5 straight victories over Kings XI, without losing a game. On any day and against any team, the strong CSK team cannot be considered a loser before the game, yet with Gilchrist at the helm and having a good taste for CSK bowlers and his Indian players running high on confidence, Mohali is waiting for another famous win by KXIP.

Gilchrist as captain can not do much with his team composition and can only motivate. But as a batsman, unless he hangs his gloves, he remains one of the most dangerous batsmen to bowl against. In their last match he has earned MOM when they defeated CSK. His start would again set the innings on fire and motivate the likes of Azhar Mahmood, Manan Vohra, David Hussey and others to set a good total or chase comfortably. Even their bowling unit appear equally dangerous, although CSK have a huge edge in that department, specially if Chris Morris is included.

Yet the in-form pace battery of Kings XI can wipe the shine out of the CSKs Indian starts, and take them to the top of the Points Table.
