Match 12: RP Singh, Gayle and Kohli Trounce Knight Riders

KKR came to Bangalore with fond memories of 2012 when they won both the games against RCB, including the one at Bangalore. But the misfiring of their batsmen could not be fixed and they scored below par 154 runs and then captain Gambhir’s mysterious bowling changes brought life to under-pressure RCB and then more sixes were scored than boundaries (12 sixes, 11 boundaries) to register another easy win.

RCBs Chase And Gambhir’s Gift
After 5th over RCB had scored only 21/1. But in the next 5 overs they reached to 80/2. McLaren bowled 1st and 3rd over and had a figure of 12/1. Kallis gave 7 runs in the second over of the inning but he bowled a maiden to Kohli in the 4th over. Narine replaced McLaren and gave only 2 runs in 5th over. With score reading 21/1, Gayle and Kohli were under pressure to push the Run Rate. They could not have thought of a better help, as Captain Gambhir removed Kallis, despite him bowing a maiden in previous over and brought McLaren back probably thinking that as he got the wicket of Mayank Agarwal, he may get KKR another breakthrough.

But probably none else can understand the logic of replacing Kallis who has just bowled a maiden over. From there on Kohli and Gayle got in full swing, adding 69 runs in next five overs, Balaji had Kohli caught by Morgan in the 10th over but the momentum had already shifted. Gayle was already out of hibernation helped by Gambhir’s bowling changes.

The fireworks continued as Gayle in the company of AB de Villiers scored remaining 75 runs in 7.3 overs. Many overs bled more than 12 runs. Sixes were in abundance for spectators to get catching practice. In the end Gayle was unbeaten on 50-ball 85 runs with 9 sixes and 4 boundaries. AB de Villiers had run-a-ball 22 runs with a six and 2 boundaries. Mayank Agarwalk could score only 6 runs, but Kohli went on to grab the Orange Cap scoring 27-ball 35 runs with 2 sixes and 4 boundaries.

For KKR, Narine went wicketless although was very ecnonomic (17/0). Kallis was hit for 19 runs in the last over and ended with 30/0 despite a maiden. Balaji had 33/1 in 3.3 overs. McLaren gave 34/1 in 3 overs. Bhatia’s only over resulted into 10/0 while poor Sangwan had 34 runs given in 2 overs.

KKR innings
Earlier sent to bat first KKR had Bisla back to pavilion on 1. Gambhir went on to score half century (59 runs, 46 balls, 7 boundaries and a six), but none else could give him company as Kallis (16 runs, 19 balls, 2 boundaries), Pathan (27 runs, 17 balls, 3 boundaries, 1 six), Manoj Tiwary (23 balls, 16 balls, 2 boundaries), Morgan (2), Rajat Bhatia (13 runs, 7 balls, 2 boundaries, McLaren (2) perished. In the end Sangwan (4*) and Narine (1*) took them to 154/8.

RP Singh was the best bowler with 3/27, Henriques had the best economy with 2/24, while Vinay Kumar grabbed the Purple Cap with 2/36, Unadkat (34/0) and Muralitharan (30/0) failed to take any wicket.
