IPL Match 14: Sunrisers win a Low Tense Chase, DD Loses 4th In a Row

Amit Mishra Sunrisers

Sehwag’s return saw the Kotla screen flashing Welcome Sultan of Delhi. He started on a promising note too, but then in Delhi it was the day his Delhi teammates in the opposition team. First Ishant Sharma took 2 in 2 balls, that included the wickets of Mahela and Sehwag, after Steyn has a bowled a wicket-maiden in the first over to send Warner back on duck. Sangakkara and Co wanted to gift DD a win, but Mishra and Steyn ensured with bat that their bowling effort does not go in waste.

DDs Inning
Reduced to 26/3 in 5th over with all three big guns back to pavilion, Botha and Juneja started the repair work. But Delhi had less hope of recovery as their two allrounders Botha and Irfan Pathan are out of luck with bat, so far in the tournament and there is no backup from Indian players. So Kedar Jadhav was the only saving grace with unbeaten 20-ball 30 runs with 2 sixes and a boundary. Rest just joined the march past to dug out. Warner (0), Sehwag (10-ball 12 runs with 2 boundaries), Mahela (14-ball 12 runs with a boundary and a six), Juneja (22-ball 15 runs), Botha (14-ball 9 runs with a boundary), Irfan Pathan (30-ball 23 runs with a boundary), Morkel and Nadeem (0). Umesh Yadav remained unbeaten on 5-ball 6 runs (with a boundary) to take DD to 114/8.

There were no big partnership, no individual heroics. Sunriser bowlers had them entangled in their web. Steyn with a wicket-maiden, 4th of IPL 2013, had 11/2, equalled his current IPL record of most economic bowling, Amit Mishra (15/1), Anand Rajan (20/1), Perera (31/2) and Ishant (35/2) did not let DD batsmen go loose.

Sunrisers Almost Mess The Low Chase
115 runs should have been an easy chase. But DDs bowling has been always good, except in the MI match. And Sunrisers batting has been always patchy throughout the season. As a result it became a tough competition. So much so that after 15 overs the required run rate was more than 7.5 runs with 5 wickets remaining.

For Delhi Irfan Pathan (19/1) in 3.2 overs, S Kaul (8/0 in 2 overs) with a maiden, Nadeem (17/2), Botha (11/1 in 3 overs) bowled well. Even Morkel (27/2) was good, but Umesh Yadav had an off day (32/0 in 3 overs). S Kaul bowled the 5th maiden of this IPL.

Still the match went to the last over when Mahela decided to give the ball to Irfan Pathan, despite his very poor record in death overs, instead of giving the ball to experienced Botha or youngster Kaul. Mahela surprised everyone when he opted for Umesh Yadav in 19th over also, after first calling Botha to bowl. He was lucky to escape with only 6 runs in his over. Pathan’s first two balls of last over was what Steyn needed to score the winning 6 runs.

Before that all famous batsmen failed, Sanga took 28 balls for 28 runs increasing the pressure, White could score only 4 runs and Perera only 2 runs getting out on a needless glory shot when he could have just done what Mishra was doing by taking singles. Even openers A Reddy (1), Parthiv Patel (19 runs in 19 balls), Vihari (17 runs in 23 balls) failed.

The run rate returned to run a ball after the cameo of 16 runs on 9 balls by Ashish Reddy. Rest was taken care of by Steyn and Amit Mishra, who is fighting to scape his 9th duck in IPL that would help him equal the IPL record of Manish Pandey of maximum ducks.

This was never DDs match after their low score. But, their bowlers showed the class, fielders supported them. Next time with better batting they may be able to open their 2013 account in 5th match. For now they move to the bottom of the table with 4th consecutive loss, while Sunrisers move to second place in the table behind RCB tied at 6 points.
