IPL 2013 Match 49: Invaders CSK Eying Secured Fortress of MI

IPL 2013 has been exceptional so far in terms of nail-biting finishes and unexpected results probably because unlike before, with 2009 in South Africa as exception, bowlers had got a better share of success. There are four teams whose fortress is yet to be breached. Along with Sunrisers, RCB, Rajasthan Royals stand Mumbai Indians who have won all the games at Home in current edition. Interestingly they take on Chennai Super Kings who are the only team to have won all Away games. Both are historically the top two teams also. But when they meet at Wankhede it is Mumbai Indians who are more desperate for victory. Overall analysis proves CSK would maintain their Away record and MI fortress would be breached.

Background
MI is the only team to have more wins than losses against CSK in overall IPL history. Even in 2013 Pollard’s stunning catch of Dhoni earned them victory at Chennai when Captain Dhoni was single-handedly taking his team to victory as his other batsmen failed. Overall MI has won 7 while CSK has won 5 in their last 12 IPL clashes.

2011: MI won their only clash of season

Overall IPL Performances
CSK has reached all the semifinals of last 5 editions, and are well placed to make it 6 now. MI has reached the last 3 semifinals and 1 final. CSK has won two titles and are the only team to register 50 wins in IPL, so far. MI need one more win to reach 50 as they have won 40 and lost 37 matches. CSK has won 56 and lost 35 matches, so far.

Team Comparison
Both the teams have bowling woes, but Mumbai Indians face it more. Overall they are winning because of the strong batting order that is performing as a unit. CSK has some good bowling performers in Dwayn Bravo, the current Purple Cap holder, and Mohit Sharma, the new sensation, besides the regular economical Ashwin. Still against good batting teams they are struggling.

But their batsmen are pulling off the matches from difficult conditions. Earlier it was Michael Hussey, Dhoni and Jadeja. Hussey is just one good knock away from grabbing the Orange Cap. Now Raina has joined the party, hitting his first IPL century in the last match.

For MI, Captain Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik are the key. Rayudu is providing the quick scores in the end, while Dwayn Smith appears to have ended their opening woes, despite his slow scoring rate. But Pollard appears to have been decoded as in the last two matches his strike rate went below run-a-ball.

Verdict
MI needs the win badly to get into Top four. But With MI bowling not being so effective, CSK batting can make merry.

And when they make merry no batting unit can compete with them. Although the teams have nothing to differentiate but for a strong team like CSK, bowling of MI is a big issue and that turns the verdict in CSKs favor even if MI has not lost any of their Home match so far in the edition.
