Asian Games 2014: India Announces 579 Member Contingent for 28 Sports

Indian Olympic Association has announced participation of Indian athletes in 28 Sports at the Incheon Asian Games 2014. A contingent of 679 members have been announced. The Indian group includes 516 athletes and 163 coaches. It is much less than the 933 contingent of 609 athletes plus 324 officials sent for the 2010 Asian Games. Indian athletes will not participate in 8 Sports, hence missing the chance for 50 Medal events out of 439 Medal events. The Incheon Asian Games feature all the 28 Sports events that are part of 2016 Olympics.

India is not participating in the following Sports events:
Baseball (2 Gold), Bowling (12 Gold), Cricket (2 Gold), Fencing (12 Gold), Karate (13 Gold), Modern Pentathlon (4 Gold), Rugby sevens, Triathlon (3 Gold).

    11. Golf – 4 Medal Events
    12. Gymnastics – 18 Medal Events
    13. Handball – 2 Medal Events
    14. Hockey – 2 Medal Events
    15. Judo – 16 Medal Events
    16. Kabaddi – 2 Medal Events
    17. Rowing – 14 Medal Events
    18. Sailing (Yachting) – 14 Medal Events
    19. Sepaktakraw – 6 Medal Events
    20. Shooting – 44 Medal Events
    21. Squash – 4 Medal Events
    22. Taekwondo – 16 Medal Events
    23. Table Tennis – 7 Medal Events
    24. Tennis – 7 Medal Events
    25. Volleyball – 2 Medal Events
    26. Weightlifting – 15 Medal Events
    27. Wrestling – 20 Medal Events
    28. Wushu – 15 Medal Events

In 5 of these 28 Sports events India has not yet won medals at the Asian Games: Basketball, Cycling, Equestrian, Handball, Sepak takraw, Table Tennis.

Sepak takraw was a demonstration game in the 1982 Delhi Asian games, but has not gained much popularity yet. This is the first time that India is sending its team for the events of Sepak takraw.
