Poornima Hembram bagged India’s first gold at 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. In women’s Pentathalon event, she finished ahead of athletese from Thailand. Poornima was the only one to cross 4000 points among the 10 participants. Her 4062 points was 147 points higher than Silver medal winner. 24-year old Poornima has been the Heptathlon Asian championship Bronze medalist in 2015 and 2017 and Asian Junior Champion in 2012. Tejinder Singh Toor (Men’s Shot Put) and Sanjivni Jadhav (Women’s 3000m) won Silver medals while Neena Varakail won Bronze medal (Women’s Long Jump_. India has won 1 Gold medal, 2 Silver medals and 1 Bronze so far to be placed 11th in the medals tally.
The 22-member Indian contingent is being led by G Lakshman.
