1966 Asian Games: India Finish 5th with 21 Medals

Bangkok Asian Games will be remembered for India’s first Gold medal and first win over Pakistan in Hockey at Asian Games. Overall with first medal in Tennis and winning medals in 5 Sports, Indians finished 5th with 7 Gold, 3 Silver and 11 Bronze medals at 1966 Asian Games.

In Group B, they won all three defeating Malaysia (1-0), Ceylon (3-0) and South Korea (1-0). In semifinals, they defeated Japan (3-0) and finals defeated Pakistan (1-0) to win Gold. Indians did not conceded a goal and won all 5 matches.

Tennis
Indians won a Bronze in Men’s Doubles.

Volleyball
Indians topped the Group A winning all three matches, defeating Philippines (3-1), Malaysia (3-0) and Thailand (3-0). But, in the championship group round they won only two and lost three to finish 4th. They won agianst Indonesia (3-2) and Thailand (3-0), but lost to Bronze winner Iran (1-3), Gold winner Japan (0-3) and Silver winner South Korea (0-3).

Wrestling
With 1 Silver and 5 Bronze, Indians finished 4th.
