Champions Trophy 2014: India Finally Wins, Meets Belgium in Quarters

On the last day of the league stage, India finally registered a win as they defeated World No. 2 and group topper Netherlands to finish third in the group. All the teams were guaranteed a place in quarter finals as the pool matches decided the positions. Germany finished last in India’s Pool B, while Pakistan finished at the bottom in Group A losing all the matches. England topped Group A. None of the teams could win all the matches, while Pakistan was the only team that failed to register any win in the tournament.

England topped the group with 2 wins and a draw against Belgium, who finished second registering 2 wins. 5-time consecutive champion Australia finally could win a match as they defeated Pakistan. They had lost against England and drew against Belgium. Pakistan lost all the three matches against England, Belgium and Australia.

India registered a win after losing first two matches, to finish third in the group. Germany was pushed to 4th position despite registering a win against India in the first match. India had a better goal difference of -2 as compared to Germany’s -5. Netherlands and Argentina were tied at 6 points with 2 wins each but with a better goal difference of +5 they finished on top ahead of Argentina who had a goal difference of +2.

For India, Sowmarpet Sunil (33rd), Manpreet Singh (47th) and Rupinderpal Singh (49th) scored the goals. For Netherlands, Van der Weerden scored the goals in 36th and 58th minute.
