Dilshan is the Best Batsman of World Cup 2011

Tilakaratne Dilshan won the battle of best willows. Five batsmen were competing for the batsmen with highest score of the tournament. Tendulkar, Sangakkara, Tharanga, Yuvraj and Sehwag failed to pass Dilshan, the highest scorer of the tournament.

Only Batsman to Score 500 runs
Dilshan scored only 33 runs in the final match against India. His cautious 49 balls 33 scored with only 3 boundaries made sure Sri Lanka did not lose second wicket till 17th over. He was bowled by India’s best spinner, Harbhajan Singh. In the process he became the first batsman, and remained the only batsman at the end of World Cup 2011, to score 500 runs.

What Happened to Other Competitors
Tendulkar was the closest competitor before the final, lagging just 3 runs behind Dilshan. After batting second, Tendulkar knew he had to score exactly 37 runs to overcome Dilshan’s tally. Probably, it was the high score and early departure of Sehwag that forced Tendulkar to keep the nation above his personal achievement of being the highest scorer of the tournament. Scoring 14 ball 18 runs with 2 boundaries, Tendulkar perished against Malinga. Overall he could take his tally only to 482 runs, becoming the second highest player of the tournament. Anyone still talking about his retirement!!

Sangakkara had 417 runs before the final. He added a very valuable 48 runs to it in the final with five boundaries, laying the foundation of a competitive total in the final against India. He finished the tournament with 465 runs in 8 innings. He finished as third best batsman of the tournament.

Tharanga, the impressive Sri Lankan opener could add only 2 more runs in the final to take his tally to 395 runs in the tournament, finishing the tournament as the fifth best batsman, after Jonathan Trott of England who hasa scored 422 run.

Sehwag could not open his account in the final and finished the tournament on 380 runs.
