History of India vs Japan Men’s Hockey Rivalry from 1932

When Indians played Japan first time in Field Hockey, 4 goals by Dhyan Chand saw them winning 11-1. When they last met, won emphatically at Asian Games where Indians have never lost a match against Japan, winning all matches played till 2018 Asian Champions Trophy. In fact, Indians have lost in Asia Cup only to Pakistan and South Korea before losing the 2018 semifinals on penalty shootout to Malaysia. In 6 tournaments, Indians have lost only once (Asian Champions Trophy 2013) to Japan.

When Japan Played India First Time (1932 Olympics)

1st match vs Japan was played on August 4, 1932 where Indians won 11-1. But, considering that they did not concede a single goal during 1928 Olympic Hockey everyone was surprised how Japan could score a goal against the Indian goalkeeper Allen. Japan’s goal came through a penalty corner by Inochora in second half. In this match, Dhyan Chand scored 4 goals, Roop Singh and Gurmit Singh scored three goals each while Dickie Carr scored once.
