
On the second day of the first test between India and Australia, rain wiped out almost two session. Still, Australia managed to score 161 runs losing just the wicket of Captain Clarke who became debutant Karn Sharma’s 2nd test wicket. The pain was more visible on Indian faces than Clarke, who retired hurt yesterday and resumed his innings today.

Steven Smith scored his 5th test century and highest test score in 43rd innings of 23rd Test match.
163 run 7th wicket partnership between Smith and Clarke was the second best for that wicket in Ind-Aus bilateral series. The record is of 173 runs that Symonds and Hogg added in 2008, Sydney.

The day saw Clarke joining Smith for the 7th wicket as the play had been called off yesterday in the 90th over after the wicket of Brad Haddin fell. Before retiring hurt yesterday, Clarke was unbeaten on 60 runs, while Smith had scored 82 runs to remain unbeaten. Australia started from 354/6 and played in regular intervals caused due to rain until the play was called off with just 30 more overs bowled on the second day, to reach 517/7.
Steven Smith added 90 runs to his overnight score of 72 runs unbeaten and again remained unbeaten on 162 runs. Clarke added 68 runs to his previous score of 60 runs and was caught by Pujara of the bowling of Karn Sharma when he was at 128 runs, adding 163 runs in 30 overs with Steven Smith. After his dismissal Johnson had to face 4 more balls from Karn Sharma to complete a productive day for Australia.
For Indian bowlers, the rain produced no help. Karn Sharma bowled 10 overs today giving away 60 runs and ended his tally at 143/2 in overall 33 overs. Varun Aaron bowled 6 overs giving 41 runs taking his figure to 136/2 in 23 overs. Shami bowled 7 overs and gave 37 runs. His final figure was 120/2 in 24 overs. Ishant Sharma also bowled 7 overs giving 29 runs as his final figure read 85/1 in 27 overs. Interestingly, with all the battering given to the main four bowlers (Except Ishant), even Murali Vijay bowled one over more and was again the least expensive giving just 2 runs. His final figure read 29/0 in 13 overs.
