Electing to bat first, the Indian openers added 56 runs in 13 overs when Dhawan (24 runs in 39 balls) failed for third consecutive innings caught behind on the bowling of Mitch Marsh. Pujara (18 runs in 64 balls) was unlucky to be given caught behind on the bowling of Hazlewood as the ball touched his helmet not the bat. Indian score read 100/2 then in 34th over.
Hero of first test, ex-captain Virat Kohli scored 19 runs when he was out caught behind on the bowling of Hazlewood. This time umpire’s decision was on spot. 137/3 showed some worry. But Murali Vijay (143 runs) in the company of Rahane (unbeaten 75) added 124 runs for the 4th wicket. He fell to Lyon stumped by Haddin but not before giving India a strong start. Rohit (unbeaten 26) has added another 50 runs for the 5th wicket as India finished Day 1 on 311/4 after facing 83 overs that included the second new ball spell too.
Johnson (64/0 in 15 overs), Starc (56/0 in 14) and Lyon (87/1 in 20) were ineffective. Hazlewood (44/2 in 15.2 overs) and Shane Watson (29/0 in 10.4 overs) were ffective. But the pick of Australian bowlers was Mitch Marsh with 14/1 in 6 overs. Australia might have been in a better position if he had not got injured. Warner (9/0 in 1) and Smith (4/0 in 1) also bowled.
India and Australia both made three changes to the team. The captains changed for both as Smith became the 45th test captain of Australia and Dhoni recovered from injury. Saha made way for Dhoni, Ashwin and Umesh Yadav replaced ineffective Karn Sharma and Shami from 1st test.
Austrlia also made three changes.
