India has played 16 tests at Lord’s in their 16 visits to England starting from their debut Test in 1932. Although Lord’s may be one of the most played venue by India they have the worst record at the Mecca of Cricket. The only test India won at Lord’s was under Kapil Dev in 1986. But the Level 3 charge against Anderson has united the English, who are facing one of their roughest patch being winless in 9 tests.
Gavaskar getting hit by Snow might have been the reason for a win being turned into draw in 1971, the record shows that except the exceptional performance in 1986 when India won the only test at Lord’s as Vengasarkar hit record 3rd century at Lord’s and Kapil Dev got the player of the match award for exceptional bowling, India has never been even close to victory in the ground that is called as heart of the cricket.
The teams of pre-1970s were not necessarily always weak, otherwise they could not have won in England. The teams till 1986 were also not weak, in fact the era from 1970s and 80s amounted to good results for India. From the 90s India boasts of more success abroad, and then the era of Fab 4, still Lord’s was conquered only once, in 1986.
Lord’s can be at best considered jinxed for India. Yet, the Indian team of new century is on a mission to create new records and wash India’s poor past. Lord’s may see another such record created in favor of India.
Jadeja vs Anderson factor may play a divisive factor. India has already damaged the English team psychologically. The thought of Anderson’s ban may stop them from concentrating on the test match. India on the other hand may gain as the swing bowlers B Kumar and Shami can gain better than what Praveen Kumar achieved in 2011.
