India lost the first test comprehensively. Second test saw India saving the test by just 1 wicket as they collapsed to 152/9 in the chase of 278 runs. Even in first innings despite a century stand opening partnership of 124 runs between Merchant and Mushtaq Ali, India collapsed to 170. In the rain-affected third test England could not even complete first inning, while driven by openers, Merchant’s century and Mushtaq Ali’s half-century India scored 331, their highest total in series.
Batsmen
Despite Hardstaff Jnr. double century, Vijay Merchant topped the bating list scoring 245 runs in 5 innings with a century. Hardstaff was the only other batsman of the series to cross 200, scoring 210 in three innings, including unbeaten 205 in first Test.
For India RS Modi (137), M Mankad (124) and Mushtaw Ali (106 in 3 innings) were the other batsmen to cross 100-mark.
For England, Washbrook and Compton scored 146 each, Hutton 123 and captain Hammond 119.
Bowlers
Bedser ruled the series with 24 wickets, twice taking 11 wickets, first and second test. English bowlers grabbed 50 wickets in the test series. Indian bowlers earned 28 wickets. Lala Amarnath with 13 and M Mankad with 11 were the mainstay of Indian bowling.
Captains
Hammond scored 119, while Indian captain Nawab of Pataudi Snr. failed miserably despite changing his batting positions scoring only 55 runs in 5 innings.
Wicketkeeper
Hindlekar could score only 28 runs in 5 innings, while Gibb scored 84 in 3 innings with a half-century.
