India@CWG 2018 on Day 2, Two More Medals from Weightlifting Takes India to 5th Rank

Day 2 saw Indians winning 2 medals again, and again only from Weightlifting, which has given 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze to lift India to 5th position in the medal tally. Badminton Mixed team won the third and final match and entered quarterfinals after topping the group losing just one set in the 15 matches they played against all three opponents. Joshna carried Indian Flag into Singles Squash event while pugilists and Women’s Hockey team won. Cycling and Swimming teams again failed to qualify while tomorrow Gymnastics will see one athlete each in both Individual Event’s final.

Day 2 Schedule and Results for India

Day 3 will see medal hopes again from Weightlifters, while the most crucial match of Hockey will be played tomorrow as Indian Men start their Commonwealth Games 2018 campaign playing against archrivals Pakistan. Both Table Tennis teams also play quarterfinals.

    Sanjita Chanu Khumukcham lifted 192 Kg (Snatch 84 Kg Games record, Clean & Jerk 108) in Women’s 53 Kg Weightlifting
    She broke Games record in Snatch lifting 84 Kg. Commonwealth Games record of 83 Kg was set by India’s Swarti Singh.


    18-year old Deepak Lather lifted 295 Kg (136 Kg in Snatch and 159 Kg in Clean & Jerk) Men’s 69kg Games record for Snatch is held by Ravi Kumar in 2010 CWG.

Saraswati Rout sufferred setback as she failed lift in the first round itself.


    Indian Mixed team registered another emphatic win to finish Group Stage with 3 straight wins against Scotland, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. On their way to quarterfinals, they have lost just one game of the total 15 matches they played winning 5-0 against all three opponents. Today, they defeated Scotland 5-0.

Boxing: Amit and Naman entered quarterfinals. Both won by unanimous decisions.

Squash: Joshna won while Dipika and Vikram lost. Joshna is the only Squash Singles player from India to enter the quarterfinals of Individual event.


    Indian Women’s team returned to winning ways although after much difficulty after suffering setback in first match yesterday. They will not meet England.

Swimming and Cycling: All the events saw no Indians qualifying to next rounds.
Gymnastics: Pranati Das and Yogeshwar Singh qualified for the Individual finals of respective events.
