RIO 2016: Lalita Babar Earns a Final, Rest Women Athletes Succumb at 1st Round

17 Indian women represented Indian in 10 Athletics event at Rio 2016. But only Lalita Babar with a National record could enter the finals, as others failed to breach qualification round. Except Norman Pritchard in 1900, none of the Indian Athletes have been successful in winning a medal in Field events. Even big Indian names could not get on the podium in the past. At Rio 2016, India is sending the biggest contingent of Athletics. Apart from 6 athletes in Field events, 32 athletes will represent India in Track & road events. Lalita Babar created a National Record with 9:19.76 during Qualification round. In the finals, she could time 9:22.74 to finish 10th.

History
In 2012 Olympics, Krishna Poonia reached Finals in Women’s Discus Throw and finished 6th. Tintu Luka finished 6th in the semifinals of 800m. Mayookha Johny in Triple Jump, Sahana Kumari in High Jump and Seema Antil in Discus Throw could not clear the Qualification round. Sudha Singh failed to enter semifinal in Women’s 3000 m steeplechase.
