Starting from the 2nd edition of World Badminton Championships in 1980, Indian women have participated in 22 editions of Women’s Singles till 2017 winning 5 medals in the event. The baton passed from Indian greats of the likes of Ami Ghia, Madhumita Bisht, Trupti Murgunde, Aparna Popat, but until 2009 none of them have reached the quarterfinals ever. But, from then Saina Nehwal has entered at least Quarterfinals of every edition. Still, the medal drought was over when PV Sindhu made first appearance in the 2013 edition. Since then Sindhu and Saina has won 5 medals together winning together once in 2017.
