Profile of Mary Kom: The Boxing Legend

Mary Kom has been conferred by AIBA the Legends Award’ on its 70th anniversary in 2016. She is considered an icon at international level in the field of Women’s Boxing. With record 5 consecutive World Championships in 48 kg, her achievements rising from the dust has been a motivation for aspirants of different sports across the globe. Now, her target is to win first individual Gold for India in the Asian Games 2014. She has switched to the 51 kg women’s category before London Olympics 2012. For the first time her position in Indian team was challenged as she failed to qualify for Indian CWG 2014 team, but has returned to the Asian Games 2014 team after defeating her competitor Pinki, who won Bronze medal in the CWG.

Initially being interested in athletics, to support her family she joined the SAI Boxing coaching in Imphal. Despite some personal setbacks, she has made a successful return.

    DOB: 1st March, 1983
    Birth Place: Samulamlan Village, P.O. Moirang, Manipur, India
    Parents: Mangte Tonpa Kom (Father) and Mangte Akham Kom (Mother)
    Coaches: Shri. Narjit Singh and Shri. Kishan Singh

She is one of the five Brand Ambassador for Commonwealth Games 2010. Manipur Government has appreciated her achievements. After offering her post of sub-inspector in 2005, promoting her to Inspector’s post in 2008, now, in 2010, she has been made the Deputy Superintendent of Police. She has also been given a free of cost house in the National Games Village.

To encourage boxing in the country, she has decided to open her own Coaching Institute. The 2010-2011 session of M.C. Mary Kom Boxing Academy started from 16th of August, 2010.
