First Test in 1959 – England won an innings and 59 runs
The test saw English Captain Peter May scoring 106 and England scoring 422 runs in the first innings. Gupte was the pick of the bowlers taking 4/102. India responded with 206 and 157, with only Pankaj Roy, the opener, displaying some fight with the scores of 54 and 49 alongwith second innings knock of 44 by Vijay Manjrekar. Statham (5-wkt haul and 7 wickets overall) and Trueman with 6 wickets ripped through the Indian batting.
Second Test in 1996 – Draw
The Second game had to wait till 1996 series when India and England played a draw in the third test of the series. The game of high totals had many positives for India. India scored their highest total at the venue scoring 521 in first innings, with twin centuries from Tendulkar, 177, and Ganguly, 136. Even in second innings scored Tendulkar scored 74 runs, but India was bowled out for 211 runs only. Rahul Dravid scored 84 runs.
England replied scoring 564 with twin centuries from captain Atherton, 160, and Nasser Hussain, 107. Indian pacers and spinners failed. Ganguly was the leading wicket taker with 3 wickets.
Third Test-2002 – Another Draw
The third game in 2002 was again a draw. The second test of the series saw huge scores. While India posted 357 and 424/8, England scored mammoth 617, the third highest total on this venue. While Sehwag and Dravid scored centuries for India, Tendulkar was out in 90s in second innings. He scored 34 runs in the first innings and 92 in the second innings. Even Captain Ganguly was out in 90s, in fact just one run short of his century, English opener Vaughan missed his double century by 3 runs. Dravid scored 13 and 115, while Laxman scored 22 and 14. Even Harbhajan scored 54 in first innings.
Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan were the pick of the hammerred bowling taking 3-wickets each.
Fourth Test-2007 – India won by 7 wickets
India’s fourth and last game here saw a series winning test win under the captaincy of Ganguly. England were bowled out for 198 and 355. India scored 481 and 73/3 to win the match and series. Vaughan, the captain, again scored a century, while Indian innings saw 5 half-centuries from the top order. Tendulkar was again out in the 90s. Dravid, the captain scored 37 and 11 not out. Tendulkar scored 91 and 1. Ganguly scored 79. From other current players, Laxman scored 54 and Dhoni scored 5.
Zaheer Khan was the player of the match with his 9/134 performance that included a second inning 5-wicket haul. Sreesanth bowled well but earned the only wicket of Collingwood.
Fifth Test-2011 – India lost by 319 runs
Scorecard: Batting first England scored 221 runs as three wickets each from Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Sreesanth saw them packing on Day 1. With opener Dravid’s century assisted by half-centuries from Laxman and Yuvraj India scored 288 runs as Broad grabbed 6/46 with a hattrick. Suddenly English batting came alive in second innings with century from Ian Belll and half-centuries from Pietersen, Morgan, Prior and Bresnan as they scored 544 runs in just 120 overs. Praveen grabbed 4 wickets but was not effective. India folded for 158 runs in 47.4 overs requiring to chase 478 runs. Bresnan grabbed 5/48 and Anderson had 3/51.
