Bowling
The series belonged to batsmen. English bowlers grabbed 43 wickets in the series. Fraser with 16 wickets emerged as the best bowler of series. Hemmings (11), Malcom (7), C Lewis (5), N Williams (2), Atherton & Gooch (1 each) were the successful bowlers.
Indian bowlers were not much effective managing only 33 wickets. Hirwani (9), Prabhakar (8), Kapil (7), S Sharma & Kumble (3 each), Shastri (2) and Wasan (1) were the wicket takers.
Batting
Winning the toss helped England in first test. Gooch created new record at Lord’s and then for the series. Gooch (752) with 3 centuries in 2 half-centuries played the most dominant series by a batsman. Atherton (378), Lamb (364), R Smith (361), Gower (291) were other batsmen who crossed 100-run mark.
Except Lord’s India never failed, but that costed them the series. Azharudding (426) was the highest scorer. Shastri (336), Tendulkar (245), Kapil Dev (220), Sanjay Manjrekar (216) and Vengasarkar (158) aggregated 100-plus. Azhar and Shastri scored two centuries each.
Captains
Azhar was the highest scorer for India, hitting 2 centuries. Gooch hit three centuries in first three innings including the only triple century in India-England Series and creating new individual total record of a series.
Wicketkeepers
More failed with bat not reaching even 100-run mark. Russell proved a bigger failure.
