Sent to bat first New Zealand, led by Germon were bundled out for 126 runs in 35 overs. Wicketkeeper-captain Germon with 29 runs was the highest scorer for the team. Even Venkatesh Prasad (0/22 in 6 overs) did not give the Kiwis any breathing space.

During the small chase, Tendulkar failed scoring only 1 run in 4 balls, but opener Prabhakar (32*) and number 3 batsman Kambli (48) build strong 64-run partnership. Captain Azharuddin (4) and Sanjay Manjrekar (0) gave Kiwis some hope as India were 75/4, but Ajay Jadeja (35*) with Prabhakar sealed victory in 32 overs.

Doull (3/42) and MOrrison (1/32) challenged Indians. But the low score did not help their cause.
