What happens when you keep a lion hungry for long!! To know that one must not go to forest anymore. If you have not, then watching highlights of Gayle’s innings against Pune Warriors is enough to understand how a very hungry lion can behave. During one of their last victories Gayle said during presentation he is HUNGRY. His captain Kohli was the person responsible as he was winning the tosses and electing to bat always. Finally winning the toss Warriors Captain Finch gave Gayle the reason to smile. Rest is history as he feasted on Warriors bowler to break all Twenty20 and IPL batting records and as expected Warriors lost by the second biggest margin of IPL.

RCBs Innings
Sent to bat first RCBs innings was threatened for a while by thunderstorms. But probably it was an indication for Pune Warriors for the Gayle Storm they were about to face. When rain interrupted RCB was 11/0 in 1.2 overs as Gayle had just hit 2 consecutive boundaries of Ishwar Pandey’s first two balls. On returned started the massacre of Warriors bowling. Pandey’s completed his first over giving away 21 runs. But his record was soon to be broken many times during the innings as there were 8 such overs where Warriors conceded 15 runs or more.

- 2nd over (Ishwar Pandey) 21 runs (5 boundaries)
5th over (Mitch Marsh) 28 runs (4 sixes, 1 boundary)
7th over (Murtaza) 18 runs (2 sixes, 1 boundary)
8th over (Finch) 29 runs (4 sixes, 1 boundary)

Gayle on the other hand remained unbeaten on 175 runs scored on only 66 balls with 13 boundaries and 17 sixes. He broke many World records of Twenty20 as well as IPL records. His inning needed no support still AB de Villiers has noteworthy 8-ball innings of 31 runs with 3 boundaries and 3 sixes. Dilshan scored 36-ball 33 runs to add 167-runs (Biggest partnership of 2013) for 1st wicket in 13.4 overs. Kohli had 9-ball 11 runs with a six, and Saurabh Tiwary (2 runs) and Rampaul were out in the last over, and with 263/5 RCB reached the highest total in T20 Cricket and IPL.
List of Records broken by Gayle’s 175*-run innings
For Warrior bowlers there was chaos everywhere. B Kumar did not have to bowl to Gayle in first 3 overs and yielded only 8 runs. But in his 4th over he faced Gayle and his bowling figure was 23/0 in 4 overs. Luke Wright was their best bowler yielding 26/1 in 4 overs and he controlled Gayle storm for a while. Others had nightmare. Apparently the playing XI of Warriors had 10 bowlers. 7 of them bowled. Mitch Marsh (56/1 in 3 overs), Dinda (48/2), Murtaza (45/0 in 2 overs), Pandey (33/2 in 2 overs), Finch (29/0 in 1 over).
Warriors Defence
Warriors batting was anyways under question due to consistent failure and low scores. Match against Kings XI was exception for them. Today Uthappa gave them the perfect start as he went on 0 on second ball. Finch and Yuvraj Singh survived for 4 overs. Then first Finch (15-ball 18 runs with 4 boundaries), then Luke Wright (3-ball 7 runs with a six), Yuvraj (14-ball 16 runs with 2 boundaries) went reducing them to 42/4 in 5.4 overs. Remaining hopes dashed and the only remaining question was if they can create the IPL record of losing by maximum runs. But they failed there too as they lost only by 130 runs, missing the record by 10 runs.
Steven Smith (31-ball 41 runs with 6 boundaries) and Mitch Marsh (23-ball 25 runs with 2 sixes) delayed the inevitable with 58 run 5th wicket partnership. Manhas remained unbeaten on 13-ball 11 runs with a boundary) with Dinda (1*). B Kumar (6), Murtaza (5) and Pandey (0) were other travellers in their score of 133/9 at the end of 20th over.
On his day, Gayle after grabbing the Orange Cap tried his hand on Purple Cap also when he was given the ball in the last over and he did not disappoint there too taking 2 wickets. Rampaul (2/21), Unadkat (2/38), RP Singh (1/20), Kartik (1/25) and Vinay Kumar (1/24) were also successful with ball.
