Kings XI Punjab Innings
Sent to bat first Kings XI Punjab suffered major setback in 2nd over when a disciplined Sreesanth sent both the openers (Gilchrist on 0 and Mandeep Singh on 2) back. Next over saw pressure rising and Manan Vohra was run out by an excellent throw from Faulkner. Score read 3/10 in 3.3 overs. After that David Hussey (31-ball 41 runs with 4 boundaries and a six) tried to rebuild the inning. But others kept failing him. Gurkeerat (10), Sathish (11), Azhar Mahmood (20-ball 23 runs), Chawla (7), Praveen Kumar (15 runs, 7 balls with 2 boundaries and a six), Awana (0) and Harris (2*) failed to control the slide and in 18.5 overs they were bundled out.
Sreesanth was the pick of the bowlers witrh 20/2 and a maiden over. Cooper (33/2) got the purple cap, Faulkner (2/30) received MOM, another surprise by MOM committee, Trivedi (2/21) became the most successful bowler in RRs history overtaking Warne’s number of wickets in IPL.
RRs Chasae of 124 runs
Royals had a contrasting style of chasing. Returning from injury Watson started attacking the bowlers scoring 19-ball 32 runs with 7 boundaries and was back to dug out in 4.4 overs with score reading 43/1. Rahane, his opening partner returned unbeaten on a score of 34 runs facing 42 balls and hitting 3 boundaries. He saw the innings through where RR needed 19.2 overs to score 126 runs losing 4 wickets. Dravid (9), Binny (0), and Hodge (15 runs) failed to stay longer. Sanju Samson the wicketkeeper batsmen playing first match of the season appeared good prospect with his confident unbeaten 23-ball 27 runs with 3 boundaries.
Despite bowling the most economical spell of IPL 2013, beating Steyn, with 10/2 and a maiden, Praveen Kumar could not see his side winning. Azhar (23/0) was comparatively economical but unsuccessful. Awatan (1/35), Chawla (22/1) were successful but Harris bled 30/0.
Another COntroversial MOM: Faulkner
Faulkner’s contribution to the win of Royals was a run out of Manan VOhra through a direct hit in 3rd over and 30/2 in 3.5 overs taking the wickets of number 6 Sathish and number 11 Awana. Except Cooper (33/2) Sreesanth (20/2) and Trivedi (21/2) had better bolwing figure. In fact Sreesanth’s double wicket and then later a maiden was the key in starting demolition of Kings XI, yet Faulkner was the Player of the Match for reasons only known to MOM committee.
