IPL 2014 Match 8 Review: CSK Set to Open Account, DD Searching for Balance

Chennai Super Kings may have recovered from the loss of the last match. Their batsmen were successful, bot bowlers failed to stop the duo M phenomenon of Kings XI. Delhi Daredevils on the other hand appears to be playing with only one player and that is Duminy. It was considered to be a bowler’s team, but even the bowlers are not too good on field. With CSK already winning double the matches in their 12 meetings with DD, unless Pietersen plays, they stand as favorites to win and open their account in IPL 2014.

History
Except the last edition, In all the editions before they have been winning at least a match against each other, except 2011 where being placed in different groups made them play only one game and CSK won that on their route to tournament win.

In the first three editions, both won a match each and never met in the semifinals although both reached the knockouts in 2007 and 2008. In 2012 despite a strong performance at league stage by DD, CSK managed to win 2 wins, one at the league stage and other was the killer blow during knockouts. In 2013 CSK won both the matches as DD touched rock bottom of the league.

Overall Performance in IPL
CSK has been a regular at the knockouts in IPL and has reached 5 of the six finals, winning twice and losing thrice, once each to Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians.

Delhi Daredevils has never reached the final, but has reached the knockout thrice, including the 2012 where at league stage they were the strongest contender of the title, until CSK that has reached knockout ahead of RCB and Kings XI only on better NRR, handed a killer blow to them in the Eliminator.

CSK has been the most consistent team, while DD has seen downs more than ups. CSK has won 59 and lost 40 of their IPL matches, till their last loss in current IPL, while DD has 43 wins and 41 losses till now that includes their first two games of IPL 7.

Comparison
CSK appears to be never short of quality T20 batsmen, while DD was always dependent on Virender Sehwag, who is no more with them. In the first two matches of this season also it has been all about Duminy. With Pietersen set to bat, their batting will get a boost. Yet, they cannot match the depth of CSK batting line up.
Bowlers of CSK were taken to task by Kings XI batsmen, but Delhi lacks such hard-hitters, unless Ross Taylor decides to finally get back in form. Overall, both teams are euqally bad so far in bowling.

Verdict
Alone Duminy cannot handle the giant team. If Pietersen joins the team, there can be a close fight. Otherwise, CSK should sail to an easy win.
