Both of them were equally destructive, reached centuries together and went on to add India’s 4th 200-plus opening wicket partnership, the first since tour of New Zealand.
Making his 200th ODI appearance, Raina (52) completed a masterly half-century reaching his 5000 runs. Kohli (22), Rayudu (27), Saha (10*) scored at 100+ strike rate while Akshar Patel faced the last over and hit 2 clean sixes on the first 2 balls that he faced.
India’s 4th highest total and overall record 20th 350+ score of 363/5 is the highest at Cuttack. Angelo Mathews used 8 bowlers. Randiv was the only one to complete 10 overs. But he produced new record of giving highest runs against India by a Sri Lankan bowler with 3/78.
Lankans Left Dry
Expecting the dew factor, Sri Lankan captain thought it will be tough for bowlers. Instead when they came to chase 364 runs, the Indian bowlers specially the seamer duo of Ishant Sharma (4/34) and Umesh Yadav (2/24) were in complete control. Akshar Patel (2/24 in 6 overs) was again impressive while Ashwin (1/52) was the most expensive.
Aaron got injured and left while bowling the 5th over. Mahela (43) was the highest scorer among Lankans. Dilshan (18) has two scores of 160 runs and was the key player when Sri Lankan almost chased India’s 414 runs losing by 3 runs. But today he was the first to go caught behind on the bowling of Umesh YAdav. The other crucial partner of that 414 run game Sangakkara (13) was also caught behind on the bowling of Ishant Sharma. Opener Tharanga (28) survived till 17th over until Ashwin got him caught by centurion Dhawan.
From then on the flurry of wickets started. Prasanna (5) and Mahela (43) mistimed Akshar Patel. Raina had captain Mathews (23). Priyanjan (12), Randiv (5), Damnika Prasad (0) and Gamage (unbeaten on 0) could not provide much Thisera Perera (29) who was the last man to fall.
Ishant is Back, Aaron is Out, Yadav Impresses
The “preparation” for world cup appeared on track. Varun Aaron (0/26 in 4.1 overs) was injured and was sent out. But Ishant Sharma recorded his best ODI performance while Umesh Yadav was almost unplayable.
