Indian Chess in 2014: First Medal at Chess Olympiad, Gold at Under-16

In 2014, Indian Men’s team created history as they won the first medal for India at Chess Olympiad. The best performance by Under-16 Indian team that bagged Gold medal at the World Youth Chess Olympiad. On the other hand, the biggest star of Indian Chess Viswanathan Anand failed to defeat Magnus Carlsen again in the World Championship, although he won other championships.

The young Indian Men’s brigade of SP Sethuraman, Parimarjan Negi and Krishnan Sasikiran won India’s first ever medal in the 41st Chess Olympiad. They won the Bronze medal at Tromso.

Sasikiran also won the individual Silver medal. Padmini Rout bagged an individual Gold in the Women’s event at Tromso.

The Under-16 Indian Team of Murali Karthikeyan, Aravindh Chithambaram, Kumaran Balaji and Diptayan Ghosh won the Gold medal in the World Youth Chess Olympiad at Gyor in Hungary.

Viswanathan Anand won the Bilbao Final Masters and the London Chess Classic, but lost the Sochi World Championship to Magnus Carlsen by 4.5-6.5. Anand could only won the third game, while Carlsen won 2nd, 6th and 11th game.

Anand won the Candidates Tournament at Russia in March to stake claim to challenge World Champions Carlsen. Anand also won a Bronze in World Rapid Chess, and finished joint 5th in World Blitz.
