India Vs England 1974 Series: Amiss and Denness Rout India

1974 Series saw England completing another whitewash at home in 3 tests series. The English top order knocked out the Indian spin trio of Bedi, Prasanna and Chandra. While 6 of the English batsmen scored runs at will scoring centuries, only two batsmen from India could cross 200-run mark. The whitewash aptly summed up the disastrous series for India.

Amiss was the top scorer of the series with 370 runs in 4 innings, only one of which missed half-century, by just 3 runs. He scored a century and two 50s. Captain Denness struck two centuries to aggregate 289 runs. With his double century, David Lloyd was the third best batsmen of series scoring 260 runs in just 2 innings. Edrich (203), Fletcher (189) and A Greig (159) were other prominent scorers.

Gavaskar with the only Indian century of tour emerged as best Indian batsman scoring 217 runs. Viswanath scored 204 runs while Engineer with 195 runs was the third best batsman.

C Old was the best bowler of series with 17 wickets. Hendrick (14), Arnold (10), Greig (6), Willis (5) and Underwood (4) joined hands with Old to take 56 Indian wickets.
Bedi with 10 wickets was the best Indian bowler. Abid Ali (6), Prasanna (3), Madan Lal and Chandrasekhar (2-each) and Solkar (1) accumulated 24 English wickets.

Engineer scored 195 runs, but Knott failed miserably scoring only 26 runs.

Denness was the highest centurion of series scoring two to aggregate 289 runs. Wadekar could score only 83 runs in 6 innings.
