After the upset of CSK, 2012 finalist, IPL 2013 produced another upset when the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders were derailed by the combined bowling effort of Kings XI at home, specially the exceptional allround performance of Manpreet Gony, who dared to attack Narine, who grabbed the first hattrick for KKR.

Kings XI Batting
Sent to bat first Kings XI started attacking from the first over. Mandeep Singh was impressive, but Gilchrist failed again getting out to Senanayake in the 4th over scoring only 7 runs of 12 balls. Manan Vohra joined him and both took the score to 61/2 in 8.4 overs when Vohra was caught and bowled by Balaji. David Hussey joined but Mandeep got out on 41 runs (30 balls, 6 boundaries) on the first ball of 11th over caught behind on the bowling of Kallis. With 70 already scored in 10 overs the target appeared to be somewhere around 160. Playing his first game of the season David Miller joined Hussey. Both had added only 29 runs in 4.3 overs when Narine’s arrival for his second over in the 15th over put Kings XI in danger.
On the 4th, 5th and 6th ball of his over he sent David Hussey (12 runs, 15 balls), Azhar Mahmood and Gurkeerat Singh (both on duck) back to dug out to get his first hattrick of IPL and overall the 10th one of IPL. Suddenly the score turned to 99/6 after 15 over and Kings XI could foresee third consecutive bundling. Senanayake dealt another killer blow as in next over he got Miller (20 runs, 17 balls, 1 boundary).
The score read 109/7 after 16 overs. Gony and Chawla joined hands and did the unexpected. In next 3.1 overs they added 41 runs, with Gony hitting 42 runs in 18 balls with 3 sixes and 4 boundaries. Narine was his main target. The last over saw Gony bowled by Kallis, who further added Praveen Kumar (1) wicket to take his tally to 3/24, the best for KKKR today. Chawla also hit 2 boundaires, one of Narine and other of Kallis scoring 8-ball 11 runs to remain unbeaten, and Kings XI scored 157/9 avoiding a hattirck of all outs in the tournament.
For KKR Senanayake (2/28) and Narine (3/33) dealt the crucial timely blows. Kallis (3/24) and Balaji (1/39) were also among the wickets.
KKRs Chase of 160 runs
Praveen Kumar again got successful in first over sending Bisla back on the first ball. and then in next over Azhar Mahmood had Kallis (1 run) caught by Mandeep Singh. With only 1 run on board, 2 wickets were gone. But captain Gambhir in the company of Morgan took the attack back to Kings XI. Both added 105 runs in 11.5 overs. And defeat of Kings XI almost became a certainty. But it was Gony’s day, as he provided the breakthrough in 14th over as Gambhir (60 runs, 39 balls, 9 boundaries) was caught behind. In the next over Azhar Mahmood had Morgan (38-ball 47 runs, 6 boundaries) caught by David Hussey. After 15 overs score read 116/4, much ahead of Kings XI score at the same stage which was 99/6. But KKR could sense trouble as their middle order was not clicking.
The evening was no different as Manoj Tiwary, Debabrata Das, Senanayake (1 each), Yusuf Pathan (13 runs in 16 balls), Rajat Bhatia (6-run 16 runs with 2 sixes) were all packed in next 5 overs and they could add only 37 runs that fell 4 runs short of the winning total. The unexpected happened as KKR finished on 153/9. After being the best batsman of his team, Gony was the pick of the bowlers also with 1/18 in 4 overs. Azhar Mahmood with 3/21 provided another useful spell. Praveen Kumar had 26/2, while Awana got 39/2. While Narine and Senanayake ruled Kings XI batsmen on his home ground, Chawla fared badly with 28/0 in 3 overs leaving no doubt in anyone’s mind about why he is no more a probable for Indian team.
