1982 Football World Cup: Italy Matches Brazil, Completes a Treble

Spain hosted the 12th FIFA World Cup from 13th June to 11th July. Italy joined Brazil at the top of winner’s list with their third win. With teams expanded to 24 from 16 teams there was more representation from Africa and Asia. The format was also changed as from 4 groups of first round the top two qualified for second round. In the second round topper of each group qualified for the semifinal.
