South Korea and Japan became the first joint hosts as they hosted the 17th FIFA World Cup, held only for the first time in Asia. Brazil stretched its lead to 5 title wins. Turkey and South Korea were the new finalists of a World Cup. Defending champion France was eliminated in the first round. 199 teams from all 6 continents participated in the qualification round resulting into 30 teams getting qualified, besides the host and the defending champion.
