While the first match of the day provided the closest match of the day, despite being played by Associates, the second match made one rethink about who deserves the minnows tag!! As Bangladesh met Sri Lanka for the third time in World Cup today playing a Group A match, nobody considered them favorite although they were a point ahead. Sri Lanka led them 2-0 in World Cup and Sangakkara loves them. Yet, when everyone expected Sri Lanka to defeat them, they surprised all by defeating themselves. Their fielding was worse than school level teams. Their fans would hope they don’t repeat the forgettable fielding. For the records, Sri Lanka won by 92 runs after twin centuries from old guards Dilshan and Sangakkara.

Sri Lanka elected to bat first. Chandimal replaced Jeevan Mendis, but he did not get chance to bat as Bangladeshi fielders and wicketkeeper refused to take catches, get even easy run outs. Their fielding was so pathetic that very rarely anybody was standing to back up a throw. Mushfiqur Rehman missed plenty of chances behind the wicket.
As a result, Thirimanne reached 52 runs in 78 balls after getting 5 lives. His catch was finally taken by diving Taskin Ahmed on the bowling of Rubel Hossain in 25th over. He had added 122 runs for the first wicket with Dilshan. For out of form Sangakkara meeting his favorite opponent was the best opportunity to retain form.
Dilshan and Sangakkara created Sri Lankan record of highest 2nd wicket partnership as they added unbeaten 210 runs in next 25 overs. Both scored centuries. Dilshan scored 161 runs while Sangakkara scored 105 runs, his fastest century in ODI.
Bangladeshi fielders were generous enough even for them. Lot of misfieldins, missed run out, stumping and catches asked for more punishment. Bangladesh was lucky they conceded only 332 runs.
Bangladeshi bowlers could not do much without fielding. In today’s circumstances, Mortaza’s 0/53 and Shakib’s 0/55 in 10 overs each can be considered gem of a bowling. Taskin (0/82) bowled the only maiden of the match but conceded the second most runs by a Bangladeshi bowler in World Cup. Rubel Hossain (1/62 in 9), Mahmudullah (0/49 in 7) and Sabbir Rehman (0/26 in 4) were the other sufferers of the day.

The second ball of their innings saw Tamim Iqbal bowled on duck by Malinga. Anamul Haque (29), Soumya Sarkar (25) Mominul Haque (1), Mahmudullah (28) could take the score to 100/5 in 21st over. Experienced Shakib (46) and ex-captain Mushfiqur (36) added 64 runs. But by 41st over they were 208/7. Sabbir Rahman (53) saved them avoid 100 run defeat as the tail in the form of Mortaza (7), Taskin (0), Rubel (0*) could not wag too.
For Sri Lanka, 3/35 in 9 overs made Malinga the most successful and economic bowler of the match. Lakmal (2/49 in 8), Dilshan (2/35), Mathews (1/36 in 5.4), Thisara Perera (1/33 in 6.2) and Herath (0/43) were the other bowlers of the innings.
Sri Lanka has jumped to 2nd position now in the Points Tally.
