Syed Modi International 2016: 3rd Consecutive Final Turns Lucky as Srikanth Wins Title

Third time turned lucky for Srikanth Kidambi who won the $120,000 Syed Modi International Badminton Championships . The top seed won 21-13 14-21 21-14 against Yuxiang (China), who has earlier knocked out 4th seed Kashyap in QF. Men’s doubles pair of Pranaav/Akshay had to settle with Runners up title.

Ranked No. 1 in 2015 also, Srikanth lost the final to 3rd seed Kashyap 21-23 21-23 in 52 minutes. In 2014 when Saina Nehwal defeated 2nd seed Sindhu to win the title, then 6th ranked Srikanth lost the final to 9th seed Song Xue (China) 16-21 21-19 21-13 in 38 minutes.

Men’s Doubles pair of Pranaav Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar shocked 2nd seeds in semis, but lost 14-21 24-22 21-8 in a tough battle against Malaysian pair of Gho/Tan.

Earlier, Women’s Doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa (seeded 6th) lost in semifinal 14-21 16-21 against 2nd seed Korean pair, who won the championship today.

Harsheel Dani was the surprise Indian performer who reached Quarterfinals in Men’s Singles.

The biggest disappointment was third seed Sindhu who lost 18-21 26-24 21-17 in a marathon battle of 1 hour 28 minutes against Nitchaon from Thailand in 2nd round.

Among other Indians, 5th seed HS Prannoy, 6th seed Ajay Jayaram, Anand Pawar, Sameer Verma and Gurusaidutt had lost in the first round.

2015 Finalist in Mixed Doubles, Manu Attri and K Maneesha were knocked out in first round. This year, Manu Attri played with Ashwini Ponnappa while K. Maneesha played with Satwiksairaj.

    Women’s Doubles: 2nd seed Kyung Eun Jung/Seung Chan Shin (Korea) def 3rd seed Eefje/Selena (Thailand) 21-15 21-13 in 39 minutes.
