Indian Tale at All England Open 2016: Saina, Again The Lone Survivor

With Olympics just few months away, it is not great news for India that out of all promising Men’s and Women’s player, its Saina Nehwal only again to reach the quarterfinals of a major tournament. None of them have showed consistent performance despite winning few international titles. All England Open 2016 is no different where despite first round huge upset by Sai Praneeth and memorable performance by qualifier Sameer Verma, Saina Nehwal remains the only Indian to enter the quarter-finals of the only Badminton tournament that earns monetary reward from Indian government too. Saina plays an opponent who has won in their last four outings.

Saina Nehwal’s Record at All England Open

The tournament started with big hopes as on Day 1 Sameer Verma played the qualifier and won two matches, defeating a top seed too, to qualify for the main draw.

The first round was better than expected as Indians caused huge upsets, specially Sai Praneeth who shocked No. 2 seed Lee Chong Wei. Sameer Verma provided another shocked defeating Hu Yun from Hong Kong. Srikanth and Saina won as expected.

The second round saw the old regular tale. All except Saina perished. While Sameer, and Sai fought hard, Srikanth’s dismal performance continued.

2nd seed Saina now plays the quarterfinals vs Tzu Ying of Taipei, against whom she has 5-6 career record. In 2011 when Saina lost in the quarterfinals, Saina has won the 2nd round match against Ying at All England Open.
