Electing to bat, with Shikhar Dhawan he ensured India gets upper hand scoring 302/4 with 4 consecutive 50-plus partnerships that has happened on West Indies soil only after 1958. Summary
Electing to bat first, Indians struggled in the first session. Murali Vijay was tamed by the bouncers and ultimately had to go on the bowling of Gabriel after scoring only 7 runs when the score was only 14 runs in 7th over. Pujara joined Dhawan and by lunch India had managed to lose only one wicket despite exceptional bowling by West Indies bowling unit of Gabriel, Holder, CR Brathwaite and Chase.
Surprisingly they did not introduce their key bowler Bishoo till then.
After lunch Bishoo was introdcued immediately and in the first over he had Pujara caught, who lost patience for the first time after playing 89 balls for his 16 runs. The score read 74/2 in 28th over as KC Brathwaite grabbed his second catch.
After that Dhawan in the company of captain Kohli added 105 runs for third wicket. Unfortunately Dhawan could not get his another away century when Bishoo had him lbw. Dhawan scored 84 runs. That brought Vice-captain Rahane with Captain Kohli. Both added 57 runs for 4th wicket when Bishoo had Rahane (22) caught by Darren Bravo. Ashwin came ahead of Saha and with his unbeaten 22 runs, and 143 by captain Kohli, India were 302/4 at Stumps of Day 1.
Bishoo had 3/108 form 27 overs.
Gabriel had 1/43 from 13 overs.
