The boxing squad for Rio Olympics 2016 saw only three pugilists qualify, unlike eight boxers in 2012 Olympics. Even the Bronze medal winner of London Olympics, Mary Kom failed to qualify. Shiva Thapa, Manoj Kumar and Vikas Krishan Yadav, who failed in last Olympics, make their second consecutive appearance at Olympics as India participates in only three of 13 events. History
Vijender Singh and Mary Kom are the only Olympic medal winner for India in boxing. He won the Bronze in 2008 Olympics in Men’s 75 kg, while Mary Kom won the Bronze medal in 2012 in 51 Kg weight category.
In 2012, eight boxers participated with Mary Kom being the only women boxer. She won the lone medal in Boxing. Devendro Singh and Viejender Singh reached the quarterfinals, Jai Bhagwan, Manoj Kumar and Vikas Krishnan Yadav reached Round of 16, whereas Shiva Thapa and Sumit Sangwan failed in the first round.
