3rd Consecutive Final for Indians at 26th China Open: Could Sindhu be the 3rd Non-Chinese to win!

From 1986 to 2016, in 25 tournaments of China Open, only two non-Chinese have won the Women’s Singles title. Besides Women’s Doubles, this is the only event of China Open where Chinese have won all the titles except on two occasions. In Women’s Singles, Malaysian Wong Mew Choo (2007) and Indian Saina Nehwal (2014) are the only two international players to have won the Women’s Singles titles. Could PV Sindhu be the third non-Chinese Women’s Singles player now? She plays 8th seed Yu Sun from China in the finals on Sunday.

After her great run to semifinal, 7th seed PV Sindhu defeated 6th seed Korean Ji Hyun Sung 11-21 23-21 21-19 in a marathon 1 hour 24 minutes battle. Coming from behind she won the race to final after losing the first set. This was her 6th win over the Korean in 9 meetings.

This is the third consecutive year when an Indian women has reached the China Open final. Saina Nehwal won in 2014 and lost in 2015 Women’s Singles final.

Sindhu will meet Sun Yu for the final. They met last time in 2014 and Sindhu trails her 2-3 in 5 career meetings.
