Indian Women Become the Third Team to Win Asian Women’s Champions Trophy

Indian Women became the third team after South Korea and Japan to win Asian Women’s Championship Trophy as they avenged group defeat against China by winning in contrasting style in the final. They lost group stage match 2 minutes before the final whistle. Today they won scoring the winning goal in the last minute. What a final! Indians won 2-1 to win their 5th Championship ever.

Indian women has won Commonwealth Games (2002), Asian Games (1982), Asia Cup (2004) and Afro-Asian Games (2003) once each before. Today, they added another Gold medal against their name as the Runners up of 2013 Championship Trophy won in 2016 Championship Trophy.

Matching shoulders with their Men’s team, they also emerged winner. While Indian Men’s team won defeating Pakistan in the final few days before, India today defeated China in the final 2-1.

Indian women took lead in the first quarter as Deep converted a penalty corner. China equalised in the third quarter. But tournament’s highest goal scorer Deepika ensured the finish within the stipulated time scoring the winner with just 30 seconds left for the final hooter.

2013 Asian Women’s Champions Trophy winner Japan finished third winning 2-1 against the two-time winner South Korea.
