Saina and Sindhu Create Indian Record of Two Medals in Same World Badminton Championship

The contingent for World Badminton Championship 2017 lived upto the tag of the strongest Indian contingent ever. The biggest in size with 21 members has created the Indian record of first-ever two medals in the same championship. The 2015 Silver Medal winner Saina Nehwal and two-time Bronze medal Winner PV Sindhu grabbed their place in semifinal ensuring two medals for India. If both win their respective semifinals, it can be all-India finals at World Badminton Championship. The quarterfinals saw two-time defending Champion Carolina Marin lose.

The day of quarterfinals started with loss of Srikanth Kidambi when he could not get through the defence of top seed from Korea. But, by the end of day India had created history by assuring two medals in the same World Badminton Championship for the first time.

4th seed Sindhu got the better off 5th seed Yu Sun from China in straight sets winning by 21-14 21-9 in 39 minutes.

12th seed Saina Nehwal defeated the home favorite 16th seed Kirsty Gilmour 21-19 18-21 21-15 in a tough fight of 1 hour 14 minutes.

8th seed Srikanth lost 21-14 21-18 to Son Wan Ho from South Korea in 49 minutes. The quarterfinal finish was his best in three appearances at World Badminton Championships.

In the semifinals, Saina will take on 7th seed Nozomi Okuhara from Japan for her second consecutive finals. Okuhara surprised the defending champion Carolina Marin in a tough three-set match. Saina leads Okuhara 6-1 in careet meet winning in the last two matches.

Sindhu, the 4th seed, is the highest left seeded player in the semifinal line up. She will take on 9th seed Chen Yufei from China for a place in final. Sindhu and Yufei are tied at 1 win each in career meet with Yufei winning at Malaysian Open 2017 while Sindhu winning at Macau Open 2015.
