Indians have participated in all the 23 editions of World Badminton Championships, starting from 1973 till the end of 2017 Glasgow Championship. 62 teams participating in three Doubles event have earned 1 Bronze medal while 44 individuals in Men’s and Singles have earned 2 Silver medals and 4 Bronze medals. After Prakash Padukone’s Bronze in 1983, Indians had to wait till 2011 another medal. Indians earned some respect in doubles when Jwala Gutta won the only Bronze of any doubles event with Ashwini Ponnappa. Even in Mixed Doubles, she with V Diju reached the best of Indian Mixed Doubles team, making to quarterfinals twice. Round 3 has been the best for Men’s Doubles. Indians have won 7 medals in 3 events. In Mixed Doubles, their best performances have been reaching two quarterfinals. But, Men’s Doubles have been the most disappointing where they have never crossed beyond Round 3 in 22 editions where they participated.

Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu have been pioneer in India’s continuous rise of medals at World Championship. In Doubles, it was all due to Jwala Gutta where Indians won the only medal in Women’s Doubles and reached closer to a medal in Mixed Doubles.
