Munich, Germany: It is raining glory for Indian shooters. After an impeccable performance by Gagan Narang and Olympic achievement of Hariom Singh, the womenfolks have taken the competition in their stride. Tejaswini Sawant grabbed the gold with a record score to become the first Indian Women Shooter to struck Gold at World Championships.
Twenty-nine-year-old Tejaswini Sawant from Kolhapur, Maharashtra in India has become the new Indian star on the global sky after becoming the first Indian woman shooter to win a gold at the World Championship in Munich on Sunday. She scored 597 (100, 100, 100, 99, 99, 99) out of 600 points in the 50-metre rifle prone to equal the record set by Russia’s Marina Bobkova in 1998.
She could not bag Olympic 2010 spot despite winning Gold as 50m rifle prone is not an Olympic event. With her next event scheduled in three-position, which is an Olympic berth event, she has the chance to grab Olympic berth. Earlier, Tejaswini has won a bronze, in her first attempt, in the women’s three position rifle event of the shooting World Cup at Munich in May 2009.
She is only the fifth world record holder in India after Gagan Narang, Suma Shirur, Ronjan Singh Sodhi and Asher Noria.
Boxer MC Mary Kom is another woman to win title at World Championships.
Tejaswini has earlier struggled to make shooting her career. But her parents always supported her effort. Her father Ravindra Sawant is an ex-Naval officer and Mother Sunita Sawant has represented State Cricket and volleyball team.
