
The Indian qualifier Sourabh Verma created one of the biggest upsets of Indian Open Super Series 2011, when he beat Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro in straight games in the first round.
Yesterday only Sourabh Verma played two matches to qualify for the main draw. In the Men’s Singles Main Draw Sourabh was placed against Sony, who won bronze in 2004 Athens Olympics was also ranked number three in the World. Many would have taken the draw as dead-end. But Sourabh showed he is in the Super Series to make a mark.
Sourabh, the 20-year old, defeated the current 37th ranked Sony by 21-18 21-19 in 41 minutes. Sony is one of the formiddable player at world arena. He has won silver in World Championships in 2007 and bronze in 2009. He has also won many other tournaments – such as China Masters, Indonesian and Japan Super Series. He will now play the second round with the winner of first round match between 7th-seed Kenichi Tago of Japan and Brice Leverdez of France.

Sourabh Verma, hailing from Madhya Pradesh, is the Current Number 1 ranked player of India. He is ranked 239 in Current World Ranking (2011 March). He is getting trained in Gopichand Academy for the last two years. Earlier his best achievement has been winning All India Senior Ranking tournament in February at Atul, Gujarat. In 2009 he has also reached the quarter-finals of Scottish Open. Besides that he has rached the semi-finals of Rohtak National Championship.
