Sri Lanka Versus India At World Cups

Sri Lanka has played India six times against India. While India has managed just two wins, Sri Lanka has won four matches. One match was abandoned.

Players from 1990s
Only Sachin Tendulkar and Muraliutharan are the players from both teams who have represented their teams in 1990s also.

Players from 2003 and 2007
Tharanga, Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene, Chamara Silva, Sangakkara, Malinga, Fernando and Muralitharan played 2007 match also. From India, Tendulkar, Sehwag, Dhoni, Yuvraj, Zaheer and Munaf also played 2007 World Cup.

Successful Players
Tendulkar has been fairly successful against Sri Lanka in World Cup, with bat as well as ball, except 2007 World Cup. Muralitharan on the other hand had mixed luck. From 2000 onwards he has tasted good success.

2007 World Cup
Sri Lanka knocked out India at group stage defeating by 69 runs. Batting first SL scored 254/6. India were bowled out for 185 runs. Tharanga was the highest scorer with 64 runs. Chamara Silva scored 59 runs. Dilshan coming at number 6 scored quick 38 runs. Sangakkara (15) and Mahela (7) could not contribute much.

Zaheer Khan took 2 wickets. Munaf and Tendulkar took 1 wicket each. Harbhajan went wicketless.

For India, Dravid (60) and Sehwag (48) showed resistance. Tendulkar and Dhoni went for duck. Yuvraj was run out for 6. Harbhajan remained not out on 17. Zaheer made 1 and Munaf scored 10 runs.

Malinga, Dilshan and Fernando took 1 wicket each. Muralitharan took 3 wickets.

2003 World Cup
Playing in the Super Sixes India, scored 292/6 batting first and then folded Sri Lanka for just 109 runs in 23 overs. India won by massive 183 runs.
Tendulkar (97) and Sehwag (66) gave a 153 run opening partnership. Yuvraj Singh could make just 5 runs. Harbhajan Singh was not on on 7 runs. Muralitharan took 3/46.

Sangakkara (30) was the highest scorer for Sri Lanka. Mahela went for a duck. Muralitharan was second highest scorer with 16 runs. Srinath (4), Nehra (4) and Zaheer Khan (2) were required to make Sri Lanka succumb. Srinath was declared Man of the Match.

1999 World Cup
Meeting at Group Stage, India trounced Sri Lanka by 157 runs. Ganguly and Dravid scored centuries and recorded highest partnerships for any World Cup match. Tendulkar scored only 2 runs coming at number 4. Muralitharan went wicketless bowled a 60 run complete spell.

Mahela was out for just 4 runs. Muralitharan also made 4 runs. Ganguly was man of the match

1996 World Cup: 2 matches won by Sri Lanka
First Match: Group Stage
Sri Lanka chased 27/3 scored by India to win by 6 wickets.
Tendulkar remained undefeated for ball-a-century 137. Muralitharan went wicketless. Tendulkar bowled 10-over spell without taking any wicket.

Semifinal
Sri Lanka trounced India in the semifinal and match ended due to crowd disruption. Sri Lanka scored 251/8. India were 120/8 when umpires took the call to award match to Sri Lanka. Muralitharan (only player to play in 2011 World Cup also) scored 5 runs. Tendulkar took 2 wickets for 34 runs. While batting Tendulkar scored 65 runs. Muralitharan took 1 wicket.

1992 World Cup
Match was abandoned due to rain

1979 World Cup
Sri Lanka defeated India by 47 runs.
