London Olympics Day 3: Mixed Baggage for India

Indian hope to win the elusive medal continued, with one of the big hopes crashed out when World No. 2 Indian Women Archer team crashed before the medal round. Badminton
Saina Nehwal won her first group match against Swiss rival Sabrina Jacquet 21-9 21-4. Her 2nd match of Group E is against Belgian Lianne Tan on 30 July.

Boxing
Jai Bhagwan reached pre-quarterfinals of the lightweight (60kg) category winning against Andrique Allisop of Seychelles 18-8 in the opening round. He meets next Gani Zhailauov of Kazakhastan.

Rowing
Swarn Singh won the single sculls repechage round and book a berth in the last eight. He clocked 7:00.49 to complete the 2-km distance, winning the five-man race.

Lost
Archery
World No. 2 Women’s Archer team of Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Chekrovolu Swuro lost 210-211 to Denmark in Quarterfinals.

Rowing
Lightweight double sculls competitors Sandeep and Manjeet finished fourth in the heats. They now compete for repechage round on July 31.

Shooting
Heena Sidhu and Annu Raj Singh failed to qualify for the women’s 10m air pistol event. Heena shot 510 to finish 12th, Annu Raj shot 378 finished 23rd.

Table Tennis
Indian Challenge over with the 2nd round loss of Soumyajit Ghosh against North Korea’s Hyok Bong Kim by 11-9, 6-11, 5-11, 9-11 and 7-11.

Tennis
Somdev lost Men’s Singles first round match to Finnish Jarkko Nieminen 3-6, 6-1.

Men’s Doubles Matches of Paes & Vishnu Vardhan and Bhupathi & Bopanna postponed to next day due to rain.
