After a high-scoring unsuccessful chase of inaugural day of the last Champions Trophy, the second day saw bowlers chasing away the batsmen. Pakistani Captain’s valiant 96 runs was no match to the collective effort of West Indies batsmen as they won by 2 wickets.
Pak Innings
Despite seeing the result of first day match of Cardiff where electing to field backfired on South Africa, the T20 World Champions West Indies captain sent the Pakis to bat after winning the toss. Kemar Roach proved his captain’s decision worth every penny as hee reduced Pakistan to 3/15 in 6.1 overs with the wickets of Farhat (2), Hafeez (4) and Shafiq (0). Jamshed and Misbah added 90 runs for 4ht wicket. Both scored half-centuries. Jamshed scored 50 runs, Misbah was unbeaten on 96 runs when his team got all out in 48 overs scoring only 170 runs. But even that was a good score considering after those two half-centuries none of the remaining 9 Pakistani batsmen had scores in double digit. In fact 6 by Wahab Riaz and extras were the third highest score of the innings.
For WI Roach bowled 4 maidens to finish with the best figure of the match 3/28 in 10 overs. Rampaul’s only wicket of the match of Irfan denied Misbah the century as Rampaul had 1/39 in 10 overs. Besides that Narine was another key bowler who had 3 quick wickets to kill any innings building effort by Pak. He finished with 3/34 with a maiden in 10 overs. Captain Bravo had 1/29 in 9 overs. Samuels (0/17 in 5 overs) and Pollard (0/22 in 4 overs finished the remaining overs.
WI chase of 170 runs
Considering the srong Pakistan bowling attack any chase could have been difficult. No wojnder West Indies had lost 8 wicket by the time they reached the winning total with 9.2 overs remaining.
Charles (9) and Darren Bravo (0) were sent in early by Mohammad Irfan with the score reading 2/15. But Gayle (39 runs and Samuels (30 runs) give the innings the required pace to chase the small total. Sarwan (1 run) perished. But Pollard (30 runs) and Captain Dwayn Bravo (19 runs) got them to 143/6. Still 28 runs were required in 13 overs. Narine (11 runs) and Ramdin (11*) and Roacj (5*) took them through.
Except Irfan’s quick tigt initial spel
l and Ajmal’s effectiveness none of the bowlers could build major inroads by taking West Indies wicket. Finally Ajmal had 2/38 with a maiden in 10 overs and 2/42 by Wahab Riaz with a maiden, put them on backfoot. But Ramdin (unbeaten 11 runs) and Roach (5* runs) took them through.
3/32 by Irfan was the best for Pakistan. 2/38 by Ajmal, 2/42 by Riaz with a maiden each, and then 1/14 by Hafeez and 0/36 in 7.4 overs by Junaid Khan could not help Pakistan save the low target.
