Syed Modi International: Men’s Singles Title Assured, Sikki & Ashwini Reach two semifinals

After being blanked in Men’s Doubles on Thursday, Indians dominated the quarterfinals of Syed Modi International on Friday assuring at least one title sealing all the four semifinal spots of Men’s Singles. Srikanth is two wins away from defending his title, while Sameer Verma shocked 2nd seed Vittinghus, leading him 3-0 now in career meet. Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy reached semifinals in two doubles event. In Women’s doubles they shocked 2nd seeds, while in Mixed doubles Ashwini with Sumeeth shocked 3rd seeds. The semifinals will have 9 Indians (Singles/doubles), 5 from Indonesia, 4 from Denmark (doubles), 1 each from Malaysia and Taipei (Doubles). Whoever wins the semifinals, Men’s Singles title and one place in Final of Women’s Doubles is assured for India on Sunday. Check results of quarterfinals, and schedule of semifinals.

Shortest and longest matches of the day in the quarterfinals of all events today was in Women’s Singles. Winner by PV Sindhu was the shortest that finished in 26 minutes, while the longest match of the day was the loss of Rituparna das who was unlucky to lose the final set 21-23.

Sindhu will play against Fitriani for the first time. Last week, Saina Nehwal defeated Fitriani in the Quarterfinals of of Malaysia Masters.
