Syed Modi International 2017: 18 out of 138 Indians reach Quarters, None of 17 in Men’s Doubles

18 out of 138 Indians (singles/doubles team) represented in Syed Modi International Challenge 2017. The quarterfinalists including defending champion SriKanth Kidambi. Since 2009, this is the 8th edition of the tournament. While the inaugural edtion of 2009 saw Chetan Anand, Saina Nehwal and Mixed Doubles pair of Aparna Balan/Arun Vishnu winning the title, since then only 5 more titles were won by Indians. Kashyap won in 2012 and 2015, Srikanth in 2016 and Saina won twice more in 2014 and 2015. All the three Doubles events have seen only one Indian pair winning the title. Will it be possible for at least top seed Sindhu and Srikanth to win the 2017 titles!!

Men’s Singles quarterfinals has 5 Indians as the event saw 53 Indians playing in the Main draw of 64 players. In the quarterfinals, 9th seed Sai Praneeth will play 11th seed Sourabh Varma, 3rd seed Srikanth Kidambi will play 7th seed Zulfadi (Indonesia), 15th seed Harsheel Dani will play 12th seed Emil Holst (Denmark) and 8th seed Sameer Verma will have the toughest battle against 2nd seed Hans-Kristian Vittinghus (Denmark).

    Sameer leads Vittinhus 2-0 in careeer meets. He won 8 years before in 2011 in the same tournament, and then after 4 years in Sunrise India open 2015.
    Srikanth also leads Zulfadi 2-0 in career meets. He won first at Maldives International 2012 and then last year in Asia Team Championships.

Women’s Singles Quarterfinals has 4 Indians. The top seed PV Sindhu will play against qualifier Indian Vaidehi Choudhari, Rituparna Das against 4th seed Fitriani (Indonesia) and Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli will play 6th seed Hanna Ramadin from Indonesia. Overall 22 Indians participated in the Main draw of 32 players.

Women’s Doubles Quarterfinals line up has 5 Indian pairs, including the 4th seeds Meghna / Poorvisha and Ashwini Ponnappa/Sikki Reddy pair. All of them have won first two rounds against other Indian pairs as the event had 23 Indian pairs out of 30 participating teams.

Mixed Doubles has three teams that have Indians. 2nd seed Pranaav Jerry Chopra/Sikki Reddy will face 8th seed Prajakata Sawant and her Malaysian partner Yigendra Krishnan, while 7th seed Ashwini Ponnappa/ / Sumeeth Reddy will take on 3rd seed Indonesian pair in the quarterfinals match on friday. The event had 22 Indian teams besides Prajakata Sawant’s pair.

17 Indian teams out of 32 in Men’s Doubles event failed to send a single team to the quarterfinals of Syed Modi International Badminton Championships 2017. 6 of them reached 2nd round, but even 3rd seed Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy lost.
