1962 Asian Games: Indians Win 33 Medals to finish Third

At Jakarta Asian Games, Indians finished third with 10 Gold, 13 Silver and 10 Bronze medals. Japan led the medal table while hosts Indonesia finished second. Indians won Gold medal for the first time in Boxing and Wrestling, while winning Football Gold medal for the second time after 1951 as Athletics provided five more Gold medals.

Indians won 14 medals that included 5 Gold, 5 Silver and 4 Bronze medals to finish second behind Japan in Athletics. In two events, Indians won Gold and Silver both.

With a Gold and two Bronze, Indians finished 6th as all the three pugilists won a medal each.

Men’s Hockey team lost final to Pakistan to win Silver medal.
Indians defeated Malaya (3-0), Hong Kong (4-0) and South Korea (5-0) to finish at top of the group. They won semifinal against Japan (7-0) but lost final to Pakistan (0-2).

Placed at Group B, Indians lost to South Korea 0-2 but defeated Thailand (4-1) and Japan (2-0) to enter semifinals where they defeated South Vietnam (3-2) and then took revenge from South Korea in the final winning 2-1.

Placed in Pool B, Indians won both matches. They defeated Burma 15-9 15-3 15-10 and Cambodia 15-10 15-6 15-5. In the main stage medal round Group Matches, they won 4 and lost only to champion Japan to win Silver. Against Pakistan they came back from behind to snatch victory while against Japan they lost in 5 sets.
